ABSTRACT

One-fifth of the boys aged 14+ in Secondary Schools go on reading the children's columns, and over 7 per cent of those aged 15+. It is commonly asserted that people buy the newspapers in order to see the results of races, football and cricket matches and the like. It would probably be assumed generally that the children's pages of newspapers are read by quite young children, by those aged less than 12. It appears that the interest in sport is large; at all ages some four out of every five boys read about sport in their newspapers. These are mere inferences; the fact which this investigation does show is that one-fifth of the boys of any or all of the age groups investigated does not claim to read the pages of the newspapers devoted to sport. The group aged 14+ in Senior Schools shows an increased interest in the children's column.
