ABSTRACT

In this chapter we shall be discussing reading purposes. As we shall see, being clear about what our purposes are in reading a particular text is really quite important in reading to learn. The trouble is that we are often nowhere near clear enough. Just as, we suggested in the last chapter, people are often very vague about the way they actually read, so they are vague about their purposes in reading. What we shall try to do in this chapter is to help you to become much more precise about your reading purposes. We want you to be able to distinguish more sharply between them. When you can do that you will be able to relate your tactics and strategies in reading more appropriately to your purposes. And when you can do that you will find that you have tightened up the whole way in which you read to learn and can perform the whole process more successfully.
