ABSTRACT

This book is addressed directly to the reader. Our view is that the reader must take responsibility for improving his or her reading. Unless he or she does that it will not improve. But other people can help. As we said in our Foreword, we have had in mind in compiling this book the sort of study skill course for students that many universities and colleges are now beginning to provide. We have therefore.built in exercises which are best performed in pairs, and on various occasions we have indicated points at which group discussion might be profitable. Teachers can help, too. In many cases, group courses of the sort we are envisaging would be led by a group tutor. The following notes are intended to help anyone called on to assume such a role.
