ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book discusses the findings of the authors' study in light of the many changes that have occurred in the realm of educational policy and in light of the implications of shifting economic and political tides for the lives of young people, their families, teachers, and youth workers. It presents an updated agenda for action that the authors believe will alleviate the serious conditions young adolescents struggle against in their attempts to develop their full potential as literacy learners. The book contains a new resource list focusing on the practical needs of administrators, teachers, and youth workers. It provides the answers to the questions What do I do next? Where do I go from here? How do I set about improving my program? The leaders in literacy programs skilfully balance academic goals and objectives with responsiveness to the joys and concerns of the young adolescent.
