ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the implications of "what works" with an eye toward "what needs to be done now", builds not only from the knowledge presented in the case studies but also on the knowledge gained as a result of the release of the first edition of this book. It findings that community agencies could make a larger contribution to young people's reading and writing development, Center staff developed, tested, and produced a new resource, Building Youth Literacy: A Training Curriculum for Community Leaders. The chapter examines the frame prescriptions for how "what works" can be translated into programs and policies. If young people's literacy needs are to be met, there are three major recommendations that deserve special consideration. The recommendations are increase the quantity and quality of school-based support for young adolescents with compensatory literacy needs, help community agencies to support young adolescents' literacy development and increase all young people's access to the world of the written word.
