ABSTRACT

One day I went up to the Liverpool Free School. This had been started by John Ord and Bill Murphy in 1971, to provide some educational facilities for the Liverpool kids who were roaming the streets, refusing to attend, or being refused admission to, the state schools; it consisted, at the time I went up, mainly of some adults with teaching experience who liked the kids and had settled in the neighbourhood, some local people who had been rooted there for generations and who offered their various abilities, a large old empty school building given them, after a year of asking, by the local authority, and practically no equipment whatever.
