ABSTRACT

Musical aesthetics is an integral aspect of African life. It is a key in the constitution and expression of African life. It opens the door to an understanding of African life. It is an expression of African anthropology. African musical aesthetics is one of the branches of African aesthetics. Musical aesthetics in Africa is a key to African life and, ultimately, to life itself. Normally, in the Western world, one does not associate philosophy with music. To be sure, as a branch of aesthetics, music may be associated with philosophy for aesthetics is taken to be a branch of philosophy. There is also literature on philosophy of music in the West but that philosophy is itself musical is an idea that is likely to confound students of philosophy in the West or, for that matter, students of music.
