ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the role and value of data in the organizational context. It Assess the ways in which electronic data in healthcare organizations provides value to the provider in clinical decision-making and to the patient. The chapter Identifies the various groups or organizations who have an interest in healthcare data and the ways in which the electronic health records (EHR) helps to serve their needs through data sharing and reporting. It describes how digital technology assists in ensuring the security of patient information. In the HIMSS Value STEPSTM Framework, the domain of Electronic Secure Data/Information is further detailed in three sub-domains: Secure data/information, Communications, and Data sharing and reporting. In the function of organizational systems, data is an empowering force for improvement. It informs strategic decision-making and serves as the substantive focus of communication at all levels. Communication is essential for organizational systems to function, and this is particularly so for healthcare organizations.
