ABSTRACT

This book will use a more narrow definition that administrative control involves time, viz., either how long or when employees will be exposed to a hazardous agent, setting, or process. This chapter explores the implications and limitations of these administrative controls. It summarize the broader criteria for acceptable uses of PPE and the main elements that should be part of a PPE management policy. The chapter was simply delayed to give readers some context and as a segue into the sections that follow on dermal hazards and the selection of chemical protective gloves, clothing, and ensembles (combinations of gloves, clothing, and respirators). The selection criteria for chemical protective clothing summarized within this section include chemical, use and user, and cost. The chapter ends with guidance for procedures and planning that should be part of an IH plan for emergency response to a chemical hazard.
