ABSTRACT

The fashion retail store is the major point that generates revenue for a fashion brand and it is the key point of contact for the consumers. In today's marketplace with increased labor and material cost, consumers still want products at cheaper prices. Over the last five years or so garment prices have increased only marginally, which is not in keeping with the increase in raw materials and labor costs. Therefore, retailers and manufacturers are trying various means of reducing the cost of manufacturing, logistics and retail by eliminating traditional practices with new technologies. The use of RFID technology is one such technology employed by many fashion retailers to keep the cost of retail operations low. In retail stores, RFID technology can be applied in product tracking, merchandise replenishment, theft detection, reducing shrinkage, managing smart shelves and self-checkout of customers. This chapter discusses all these applications of RFID in retail with a brief highlight of opportunities and threats.
