ABSTRACT
The economic and demographic histories of England and India in the 19th century discredited Malthusian ideas. Yet they cast a profound influence over policy and influential sections of Indian elites came to accept them in the twentieth century. This section provides policy documents from the Famine Commission to the Censuses and the Sokhey Committee and Bhore Committee.
