ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the following overarching question based upon an exploration of the case study network: can transformative justice be advanced through networks of trade unions, social movements and nongovernmental organisations in the global South? This question is important for several reasons. It explores the political responsibility and transformative justice is synergistic processes. Participation by affected communities in shaping the agenda of policy and practice is necessary for transformative justice. The chapter presents the case study of network, the Housing Assembly cluster of actors and the Poor People's Alliance cluster of actors share many of the same goals and rhetorical commitments. The case study puts forward original contributions to the study of transformative justice, of human rights more broadly, of advocacy networks and of post-apartheid South Africa. The chapter also explores the existing scholarship in these areas, particularly with regard to the theorisation of transformative justice.
