ABSTRACT

Political, economic, socio-cultural, technological, legislative and ecological (PESTLE) is a framework representing the macro-environmental factors that need to be considered when analysing an organisation. The framework tends to be over-used within the business schools and has taken on many different forms, including: political, economic, socio-cultural and technological (PEST); socio-cultural, legislative, economic, political and technological; and socio-cultural, technological, economic, ecological, political, legislative and ethical, amongst others. The PESTLE template promotes proactive thinking rather than reliance upon habitual or instinctive reactions. A PESTLE analysis can help to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats factors and support the analysis required to understand an organisation’s strategic position when developing strategies. Many academics prefer the original PEST model, as it is thought that it puts more pressure on strategic appreciation and analysis than a longer list of headings.
