ABSTRACT

The R. R. Blake and J. S. Mouton Managerial Grid allows a degree of personal assessment of management styles so that the individual can be aware and, if need be, compensate for their naturally preferred style. There is an assumption that individuals gravitate towards a natural management style and that this can be classified in terms of the balance between people and task issues. The Y axis – ‘concern for people’ – is the degree of interest in people’s needs and feelings, whilst the X axis – ‘concern for results’ – is the degree of interest in tasks such as resources, procedures and results. The managerial styles on the grid are as follows: these are Country Club management, Team management, impoverished management, Task management and Dampened pendulum.
