ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview and a discussion on elements, negotiation application, and limitations of subliminal linguistics. Milton Erickson was an American psychiatrist specialising in medical hypnosis and family therapy. He was particularly noted for his approach to the unconscious mind and involvement in the development of the concept Neuro-Linguistic Programming. His work was later adapted and built upon by the founders of NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder, who established a subliminal language structure designed principally with coaching and mentoring in mind. This has been used more widely in the commercial environment to persuade and influence and is often referred to as subliminal linguistics. The Conversation Control Cube is a framework designed to help those in negotiation situations remember common linguistic mechanisms that work at an unconscious level. Elements of the cube are command, consensus, contrastor, choice, confuse, and clairvoyant.
