ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview and a discussion on elements, negotiation application, and limitations of David A. Kolb’s experiential learning cycle. Kolb's work is acknowledged by academics as seminal in the area of human learning behaviour. His learning cycle framework is comprised of four methods of learning that may be adopted by an individual. Kolb views learning as an integrated process with each stage being mutually supportive of and feeding into the next. It is therefore possible to enter the cycle at any stage and follow it through its logical sequence. However, the theory posits that effective learning only occurs when an individual is able to execute all four stages of the model. While the theory is good at analysing how learning occurs for individuals, it does not take into account learning that occurs in larger social groups, that is, how does the individual's interaction with a larger group impact the experiential learning process?.
