ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview and a discussion on elements, negotiation application, and limitations of Thomas-Kilmann conflict mode instrument. The model looks at the five main ways of dealing with conflict in terms of assessing an individual's desire to achieve their goals compared to that of the other party. It is thought that understanding one's own conflict style together with the other party's can help an individual adopt the best approach to a negotiation. There are five main modes of conflict: Collaborating, Competing, Accommodating, Compromising and Avoiding. This is a well-recognised conflict profiling tool, which can aid awareness of individual style as well as provide a selection of alternative methods of engagement. It is believed that the key to the successful utilisation of this approach to conflict is personal awareness, as failure to recognise one's own or others' styles could result in unsatisfactory resolution.
