ABSTRACT

The study was performed at a farm situated in the North of Udmurt Republic of Russia. Eight soil types that are typical for the south taiga zone were detected. Digital soil maps were produced using five algorithms on the basis of two sets of covariates: with and without legacy soil map. The influence of the legacy soil map as covariate on digital soil maps was negligible, despite the fact that this legacy map was evaluated by experts as very good. This can be explained by the fact that the legacy and digital soil maps were made on the basis of the same relationships: soil formation factors—soils. Digital maps of the upper soil horizon texture produced on the basis of two methods: in the field and by the method of laser diffractometry, were 54% similar. They were also about 40% similar to legacy texture map.
