ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the debate over the role of the police and other agencies, most notably private security, in patrolling public streets. It focuses largely upon the UK, but uses other international examples where appropriate. It starts by considering the importance of police patrol, then examines some examples of private security patrol that have been researched. The chapter then considers a case study of the south west of Portsmouth and the diversity of patrol that exists there, before ending with a consideration of the debates over filling the patrol gap.
