ABSTRACT

This chapter examines what is meant by ‘private policing’. The chapter deconstructs what is meant by both the terms ‘policing’ and ‘private’, drawing out the key traits. In doing so some related concepts such as security, regulation and social control are also considered. The chapter then explores previous attempts at classifying the different types of private policing before moving to offer a classification based upon: the public police, hybrid policing bodies, voluntary policing and private security.
