ABSTRACT

Somewhere between short, daily writing strategies and full-blown essays are weekly writings. The daily writing allows students to flex their writing muscles in a way similar to the warm-ups an elite athlete might complete before a race. Weekly writing are the drills, scrimmages, and scenarios that same athlete might practice leading up to the game. Weekly writing gives space for some of the repeated practice necessary for building up to more complex writing tasks. The analytic writing necessary for argumentative and informative genres needs to be broken down into smaller pieces to allow students time to refine and hone their craft. In good argumentative writing, the author tears down the counterclaim with evidence and/or reasons. The repetition of writing and delivering the arguments help students refine their argumentative craft. Both a comprehension strategy and a writing strategy, Found Poetry empowers students to “find” poetry in prose.
