ABSTRACT

After 80 years of successfully protecting central Netherlands from the adverse effects of the North Sea, the Afsluitdijk (Enclosure Dam) is now required to upgrade in order to adapt to the expected climate changes. This study proposes a riprap overlayer cross section to meet the expected critical boundary conditions in the future. It presents the typical parameters of the proposed cross section. The study completes the calculations by checking run-up and overtopping, which is the limiting factor, to define the crest height. It also checks the overall stability of the structure by using Finite Element Models (FEMs). The results of the study show that the proposed cross section can provide the required protection until 2050.
