ABSTRACT

Responsibilities included overseeing and managing medical humanities in the curriculum. The University of Wollega Medical School is a new school and part of a National Programme to increase the number of medical schools and doctors across Ethiopia. In 2013, a partnership was formed between the medical schools of the University of Exeter in the UK and Wollega in Ethiopia. At first, the president and vice-president of Wollega asked us to help with teaching, in particular teaching their teachers to teach. The head of the ‘humanities department’ is a good contact to have made. Actually, the department doesn’t go by that name, but ‘humanities’ seems to cover all artistic endeavours—fine art, music, dance, drama and more. The students lack most practical materials, instruments to play, crayons and paints for their art, but do what they can.
