ABSTRACT

Many medical conditions, psychiatric disorders and cognitive differences co-occur with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Knowing that a child has difficulties in these areas, or has a history of problems in these areas, can provide school psychologists with data to inform their evaluations and eligibility recommendations. Comorbid medical conditions such as increased seizure disorders, as well as intellectual disabilities, are discussed. It also includes a discussion of common psychiatric comorbidities/differential diagnoses including anxiety disorder, depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), aggression and schizophrenia. Intervention strategies for these associated problems are included. Several additional common problems experienced by children with ASD are noted including sleep difficulties, feeding problems, elopement. Resources are provided for these concerns.
