ABSTRACT
THE Naiyayikas maintain that when the material things are perceived there is need of contact between senses and substance. But in the case of negation there is no need of such contact. The contact exists between the sense and the basis. But the basis is known as the characterized and the negation as the characteristic.1 And if what is characterized is seen through the senses, the characteristic also must be so seen.
