ABSTRACT

Politics, religion, and astrology were often closely interwoven in the early modern period, which is evident in many recording calendars or almanacs. The production of consecutive yearly calendars was a thriving business because not only were people eager for data regarding the weather, but during this war-torn era they also thirsted for forecasts on the course and possible outcome of military conflicts. Like many others, Horky believed that war was a punishment from God and that penance would bring peace, but he was also horrified about the conduct of many “Christians.” “Someone who walks underneath the windows of city hall is often smarter than those holding counsel within. It would have been and still is beneficial to pay attention to the counsel and suggestions of common people. In other words, only if both political leaders and their subjects embraced a Christian mindset and pious lifestyle would the war end.
