ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book surveys the uses and function of prophecy, prophets, and oracles among Jews, Christians, and pagans in the first three centuries of the Roman Empire. It also explores how prophecy and prophetic texts functioned as a common language that enabled religious discourse to develop between these groups. The book shows that each of these cultures believed that it was in prophetic texts and prophetic utterances that they could find the surest proof of their beliefs and a strong confirmation of their group identity. Jews, Christians, and pagans attached great weight to prophecy. It is difficult to imagine what their religious systems would look like without it. All three saw prophetic signs and texts as the means of salvation and a sure sign of Divine Providence.
