ABSTRACT

This chapter details the various policies, programs, and initiatives adopted by local governments in the United States to achieve a sustainable transportation system both efficiently and effectively. It starts with an overview of what sustainable transportation encompasses and details some of the underlying consequences of traditional transportation planning. The chapter discusses sustainable transportation policies adopted by cities followed by an evaluation of the performance measurement and management techniques used. It concludes with a case study on sustainable transportation efforts in Atlanta, Georgia, as detailed by two practitioners working in this area. The chapter suggests cities that are engaging in a wide variety of sustainable transportation policies and even returning emphasis to walking and biking modalities, which were once considered inefficient transportation modes. In 2015, the City of Atlanta Office of Sustainability, in collaboration with the city's Transportation Planning Division, Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), and 35 more stakeholders, developed The Atlanta Climate Action Plan.
