ABSTRACT

This chapter utilizes a broader definition of pollution prevention, not limited just to this "reduce" component of the famous mantra of "reduce, reuse, recycle (3Rs)" but to a broader definition inclusive of all three of these components. It focuses on pollution prevention from the perspective of solid waste management and explores the topic from the standpoint of greenhouse gas emissions and their related reduction efforts. One of the most basic municipal services is often solid waste collection. The chapter explores solid waste collection methods from the most preferred to the least preferred management option. It discusses municipal efforts at reducing solid waste before it is created and efforts to reuse solid waste. The chapter then turns to the recycling and/or composting of remaining solid waste, and finally properly collection and disposal of solid waste not already managed via the 3Rs.
