ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the measures and issues surrounding police performance at both the departmental and individual levels. It discusses the methods of police performance measurement at both the departmental and individual levels. The chapter also discusses the differences between input, output, and efficiency measurement. It explores the basic principles of police performance appraisals. The chapter describes the differences between success and performance indicators. Performance measurement is a critical strategic management tool. Creating appropriate quantitative and qualitative performance measures enables law enforcement managers to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of their activities. The evaluation of police performance is also conducted at the individual level. Establishing appropriate quantitative and qualitative performance measures can assist law enforcement managers in determining the effectiveness of their operational activities. Performance management refers to an umbrella of all organizational components and activities affecting individual, work group, and agency performance.
