ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the maintenance of organizational integrity and professional standards in policing. It provides an understanding of police misconduct and corruption, its causes, and organizational strategies for its prevention. The chapter describes police deviance, misconduct, and corruption. It identifies the dimensions of police corruption. The chapter discusses the ways police departments can control officer deviance and explores the characteristics of the internal affairs process. It explains the police inspectional process and analyzes the police early warning systems. The chapter focuses on the use of disciple to control deviance. Integrity is the normative inclination among police to resist temptations to abuse the rights and privileges of their occupation. The function of internal affairs is to assist in maintaining the professional integrity of the department and preserve public trust by inspecting and controlling, preventing and detecting and investigating allegations of employee misbehavior and violations of professional standards.
