ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the issues driving change in policing. It explores the factors involved in the use of deadly force. The chapter considers the relationship between organizational culture and good policing. It identifies the strategies for building community trust. The chapter focuses on the "Principles of Good Policing." It examines the concept of legitimacy and how it affects both the police organization and the community. The chapter also considers how to deal with budgetary issues. It analyzes the values of the "new generation" of police officers and how they affect supervisory styles. The chapter explores what is necessary for effective policing. The police officer's mission is that of guardian: to protect. Since the summer of 2014, the nation has seen a series of controversial cases, many of them captured on videos taken by the police, bystanders, or nearby security cameras of police officers using deadly force in questionable circumstances.
