ABSTRACT
Diana Newall presents survey material on the interaction between the Roman Catholic Venetians and the native Greek Orthodox Cretans in the capital of the island, Candia (present-day Herakleion). The material is based on archival research and landmark publications on the Venetian archives and bears testimony to the ever increasing engagement between these two culturally, ethnically and religiously different sets of inhabitants by underlining pivotal shifts in their relation during the course of the fourteenth century.
