In this chapter, the authors focus on characterizing the phenomenological approach taken by the professor and offer the meaning of “free to learn” for participants in their case study course and in other studies. They discuss what stands out for their research team regarding a phenomenological attitude based primarily on the writings of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The authors describe quotes from participants with the intent to provide readers with a seat at the table in the classroom and deal with the theme of “different” and the ground from which it stood out. They also describe the other themes of the case study that focus on what it was like to be a learner in the course. Students in the case study course felt free to apply the learning from the course that they found relevant. The case study students, with one exception, were adults with careers.
