ABSTRACT

This chapter presents clue chords, and identifies the tonal border, chromatic pivot, enharmonic pivot, pivot tone, the enharmonic german sixth chord, and the enharmonic diminished seventh chord. Most art music is a “road trip” through several tonal regions. Every modulation can be approached with the same two goals: to identify the “tonal border,” and to discover the means of transportation across it. The harmonic logic of a modulation lies near the tonal border, where one of three circumstances will likely exist. These include: the first chord diatonic in the new key is the last chord diatonic in the old key; and the first chord diatonic in the new key follows the last chord diatonic in the old key. These also include: the first chord diatonic in the new key and the last chord diatonic in the old key are separated by one or more chords diatonic in neither key.
