ABSTRACT

Police officers from United Nations contributing countries entering into a United Nations Police (UNPOL) mission all follow the same general procedures. Prospective UNPOL officers must also pass a battery of examinations to ascertain their suitability for active participation in a peacekeeping mission. The instructors in the police training center will be from other countries; however, it is not until the UNPOL officer reaches their assigned unit that they fully realize the extent of the hyper-diversity of an UNPOL mission and begin to experience acculturative stress. In most countries, prospective UNPOL officers then participate in pre-deployment training provided by their national police organization. When a new UNPOL officer is deployed to their assigned unit after induction training, the hyper-diverse environment of an UNPOL mission can be quite a shock. Each UNPOL officer arrives in their UNPOL mission fully indoctrinated into his or her own nation's policing philosophies and culture.
