ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author shows how he works with rigid attitudes with the expressed purpose of helping clients to develop greater attitudinal flexibility. The author discusses how he works with rigid attitudes, how he works with related fixed ‘mindsets’. He argues that human beings have a choice concerning the attitudes that people take towards the adversities that they encounter, the author take an existential position. He discusses the issue of attitude choice more carefully as it is an important concept to understand if he is to encourage a client to take a realistic approach to attitude change in therapy. He concentrates on how he works with rigid and flexible attitudes and mindsets. The author helps the client to understand that both attitudes are based on a sense of what is important to them or to their preference. A preference or sense of importance is common, then, to both psychological disturbance and psychological health.
