ABSTRACT

The death of her mother was a formative moment in Christabel’s life. Although she still had Betty to love and care for, Christabel wanted to honour the woman she had been close to all her life, her companion and friend as well as her mother. As the New Year of 1929 dawned, Christabel sent affectionate greetings to Esther Greg, glad that her friend was taking part in the Memorial Fund, set up by Kitty Marshall, Rosamund Massy and Lady Rhondda, to commemorate her mother. Christabel now had an additional reason to keep working hard, namely that she had to earn enough to pay Betty’s not inconsiderable school fees. Although she received some income from her writings, any money derived from preaching was unpredictable since it was in the form of an honorarium, usually given without mentioning an amount, let alone agreeing to one.
