ABSTRACT

The news of Christabel’s death was greeted with much sorrow by her friends in America, many of whom wrote to Grace Roe. For former suffragette Charlie Marsh the news of Christabel’s death was a particular shock, since she had recently received a letter from her. In touch with many of the former Women’s Social and Political Union members, Charlie remembered past times. Adela in Australia and Sylvia in Ethiopia made no public statement about their sister’s death but undoubtedly were upset by the news. None of the newspaper obituaries mentioned Aurea either. The British press mainly focused on Christabel’s suffrage days. The obituaries in the American press were more effusive, highlighting Christabel’s contribution to the women’s cause but also giving more attention to her evangelical and humanitarian work. Relatives and former suffrage friends in England were soon arranging a memorial service to be held at St Martin-in-the Fields, London, on 14 March at 12.30 p.m.
