ABSTRACT

The tragic events that occurred inside that empty sewage tank highlight several important considerations related to the danger involved with confined space entry. This chapter describes and explains the elements needed to ensure full compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administrations (OSHAs) confined space entry requirements. It discusses that the safety and health professional has identified worksite permit required confined spaces and either can prohibit the entry of any organizational personnel from entering such spaces or has developed a written permit-required confined space program. OSHA has a specific standard that mandates specific compliance with its requirements for making confined space entries. Most rules, regulations, and standards have their own sets of terms essential for communication between managers and the workers required to comply with the guidelines. For this reason, key terms that specifically pertain to OSHA's Confined Space Entry Program are defined and presented in alphabetical order.
