ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with employment. The issue of whether or not the labour is employed efficiently is not considered in any detail. The chapter discusses the type of employment provided in new firms. Thus, no attention is paid to the male/female or occupational mix. The contribution to actual employment of new firms formed over some period is most commonly measured in terms of year employment in survivors. With the growth in unemployment in the late 1970s and early 1980s policy makers have increasingly focused on the formation of new firms as a channel through which increased employment opportunities may be provided. Most attention in relation to new firm employment has focused on their actual employment at some date after birth. The chapter considers the relationship between the length of time period chosen and end year employment.
