ABSTRACT

Measuring the efficiency of an industry or a business may be done in various ways by an expert who has access to all the necessary information. Great efficiency in industry is a means of assisting to cure unemployment, particularly as regards export. In individual countries there would be greatest unemployment in efficient industries and no lack of employment in inefficient industries. There is a wide variety of British made articles whose manufacture before the present great war was definitely inferior in efficiency to that of other countries. Britain won world leadership in industry because her industries were more efficient than any other. Non-productive personnel in British and American mass-production industries have both been described and compared. Some of the reasons for these variations have been given; they account for a large part of the variation in operating efficiency between British and American mass-production businesses.
