ABSTRACT

Mass-production layouts have been copied by many companies and in many countries. Most people, most seniors who have criticized mass production, have done so on the ground that it leads to monotony. Mass production commenced some forty years ago in the building of railway freight cars in the United States, and improvements in its technique are still continuing in many parts of the world. Men working on the repetition work described definitely prefer the mass production to the older methods as easier on them, notwithstanding the higher output rates achieved. The modern "brain worker" in a large office is in a strikingly parallel but considerably less favourable position than the manual worker on mass-production work. Working pace, efficiency, and the happiness and goodwill of the workers can only be adequately planned and effectively accomplished if the point of view of the workers is first thoroughly understood.
