ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the necessary tools, processual knowledge and tips to fund, plan and commence video-reflexive ethnography (VRE) in a healthcare setting. It describes the following topics: building relationships with key stakeholders, attracting research funding, submitting an application to Human Research Ethics Committees /Institutional Review Boards, and visual and legal ethics including data retention. The organic unfolding of VRE research may result in people’s roles and contributions developing in unexpected directions. All research proposals are subject to ethics approval, and VRE can present particular challenges with regard to obtaining ethics approval. The VRE community now has quite a stock of knowledge about ethics committee questions and concerns. VRE is in the first instance about engaging with people’s lifeworlds without prioritizing disciplinary frameworks and procedural perspectives, and without predetermining the specific outcomes of such engagement. The chapter explores approaches to persuading services, professionals and patients to participate in VRE.
