ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on some of the multiple facets of violence against children in Africa, their manifestations and impact on children. It particularly addresses corporal punishment of children, child labour, some particular practices of extreme acts of violence against children and gender-based violence. The chapter highlights international and regional legal framework relating to the issues, particularly in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Africa's Agenda for Children 2040. It outlines challenges and various initiatives for achieving prohibition and elimination of all forms of violence against children in Africa. African children, including children with albinism and with disabilities, are vulnerable to violence and ill treatment when they are accused of witchcraft. The girl child may be victim of female infanticide, sexual, physical and emotional violence, while the adolescent girl may be at risk of child marriage, female genital mutilation, neglect including differential access to food, medical care and education, child prostitution and pornography.
