ABSTRACT

Student diversity is an abundant natural resource in every classroom. Adjusting instruction requires agile thinking to change directions quickly and to turn potential problems into opportunities. Plan an activity where teachers can learn from students in every lesson. Make plans to use student strengths to leverage learning. This method of visualizing teacher decisions as a series of connected steps and adjustments can also be used in planning. The starting position is an essential means for teachers to assess the necessary adjustments needed in the next part of instruction and starting positions provide students with a record of their thinking to measure learning from the lesson. The notion of thinking in terms of At-If-Then statements comes from the cognitive research on problem-solving. Question, Answer, Practice, Switch is a routine that enables students to learn how to offer help that teaches a peer to use a new skill independently.
