ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the foundations of standard practices in contemporary architectural education and speculates on developments that have shifted architecture away from being a socially engaged discipline to one more closely aligned with neoliberal marketing and advertising strategies. It investigates how architecture is allied with advertising through reliance on simplistic narratives, producing an abdication of social engagement in favor of instant and perceivable comprehension. It explains how architecture relies on hierarchical diagnosis and repair strategies to produce false and unchallenged social solutions.
