ABSTRACT

Due to limited water for human consumption in many countries, recycling of used water is very often a necessity. The limitation in the amount of water available is due to many factors such as limited rainfall, insufficient storage dams coupled with very short rainy periods. Recycling or reuse of water is fraught with many obstacles such as costs of collection, storage, and purification. Cleanup of water is not as simple as removal of solids by filtration and addition of disinfectants to destroy germs. The reason for this is that this type of treatment does not deal with all types of pollutants in water. Pollutants enter water from activities, mainly, in the following sectors: industrial, agricultural, and domestic. Water is polluted by insecticides, pesticides, fungicides, heavy metals, dissolved organic compounds, bacteria and viruses, to name just a few.
