ABSTRACT
The relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union has been central to British politics for nearly 50 years. It has surely never been more controversial than in the run-up to and since the 2016 referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU. Although the balance of opinion for and against membership has fl uctuated since the UK joined, throughout the topic has raised strong passions inside and outside Westminster.
