ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the scope of the manual, a guide developed for advanced practitioners and supervisors of family-based treatment (FBT) for adolescent restrictive eating disorders. We first describe our aims in writing this manual, which is to elevate the practice of FBT through a closer look at what it means to practice the treatment with fidelity. Treatment fidelity is the delivery of clinical interventions as intended and encompasses adherence to prescribed practices, abstention from proscribed interventions and doing so with sophistication or competency.

Briefly, we review best practices in clinical supervision that we believe will help support the development and training of novice FBT clinicians. These guidelines are driven by a need to increase competency in the delivery of evidence-based treatments. The focus of the manual is outlined for the reader, which includes information about the target audience, clinical population, structure and resources embedded in this work.
